Not many of us reach the kind of heights in our career where Gibson ask us to have a little play around with our favourite guitars and produce a signature model, but Herb Ellis was one. Not a massive household name, but in the Jazz world, pretty huge none-the-less with stints in the Oscar Peterson Trio and the Joe Pass Quartet on the CV. Well, the first thing Ellis did to the trusty old ES-175 was rip out that horrible squeaky bridge pickup. Filled with a purist's sense of relief and satisfaction, Ellis then went on to add such features as... well, that was it really aside from a bit of nice bling. You see, until 1951, the ES-175 only came with one bridge pickup, and permanently became a two pickup only model in 1971, so clearly for players like Herb Ellis, there's a clear message to the Gibson boys: less is more. This piece made in 1995 is exceedingly clean and original, featuring the fixed humbucker rather than the present day floating neck pickup that the custom shop are doing. It is complete with a hard case.
