Gibson started making lapsteels in the 1930s, and turned out a pretty substantial range of the bell like instruments, including this fine little model, the Ultratone. It might be just a plank of wood with a magnet in it and some wires stretched over, but the Ultratone is a plank of solid maple wood with a crystal clear Gibson single coil pickup in it, so it's got a few more bragging rights than your average. Finished in the sunbursty finish known as Seal Brown, this piece is from 1946, some time before 1959 when the Ultratone was discontinued, but as you'd expect from a Gibson, the serial number doesn't give much away. It's in great condition and survives with all of its original features including the ornate design on the pickup cover and some nice diamond board markers. Complete with case, this is a great Lapsteel.
