A cult guitar and then some, this vintage 1983 Fender Elite Telecaster is an extremely important piece of Fender’s history. After the scary bit in the ‘70s when the Japanese guitar market began to truly flourish, Fender launched Squier, but just prior to this in 1981, they hired a man by the name of Dan Smith to help turn their fortunes around. Smith had some radical ideas about design, and this unusual-looking tele was part of his vision. Lasting a scant 18 months from 1983 until CBS put itself up for sale at the end of 1984, the Elites had a lot of technological departures for Leo’s lads. Built around an Alder body with a bound top, this example has a Rosewood fingerboard mounted on top of its Maple neck, and while that’s not unusual, the rest of the guitar certainly is! The pickups here are a pair of active humbuckers, wired to twin sets of Volume and Tone knobs. The knobs themselves have knurled rubber grips and a staggered layout, with a three-way toggle taking you between the pickups themselves. The bridge was another major departure for Fender - a back-loading, top-mounted, high-mass affair, increasing sustain without passing through the body. It’s difficult to see with modern eyes, but for the guitarists of the 1980’s, this Tele was a huge shift for Fender, and as unorthodox as it is, it’s the sort of guitar that you fall unconditionally in love with. Protected by a three-year warranty with our bodacious technicians, this vintage 1983 Fender Elite Telecaster is available at Wunjos with a gig bag as standard.
