Inspired by Japanese motorbike culture, the Yamaha RS820CR is part of the Great Builder’s much lauded Revstar line, and is every bit as stunning to play as it is to look at. With Yamaha having a great legacy of solidbodies to draw on and a huge amount of work having gone into its development, this was never going to be a bad instrument, but the guitar community wasn’t ready for just how good it was going to be. Built around that tremendous-looking Mahogany body, the RS820CR has a Maple top with some delicately applied racing stripes running up the centre. The 3-piece Mahogany neck is topped with a bound Rosewood fingerboard, and its 22 Jumbo frets are aided by a Urea nut which helps keep everything in tune and sustaining nicely. Operating over a 24.75” scale length that would be immediately familiar to any Les Paul player, the RS820CR offers that little bit extra to guitarists seeking to squeeze a little more from their classic twin humbucker setup. To this end, Yamaha went as far as developing a set of bespoke pickups for this range, which manifest themselves here as a matching set of VH5+ Alnico V humbuckers. Wired through a three-way toggle, the RS820CR has more tricks up its sleeve, as it offers a push-pull ‘Dry Switch’ into the bargain.
