It would be easy to put Warwick into a neat pigeon hole: basses for modernist prog-nerds and people who think that the only way to play bass is to slap it repeatedly. Well, Warwick may be aware of this insubordinate stereotype, because they have made an attempt to prove to the world that they can make classic style basses. Here it is, the Starbass. It's a semi hollow bass with f-holes a features passive (yes, passive!) pickups that look very much like the Gibson ones that come on the EB models of yester-year. The bass you are looking at in the photos is a five string version, which kind of digresses away from the theme of classic style bass, but Warwick know their customers and their fan bass, so a five string was absolutely necessary. It comes in black also, as well as a four string version that also comes in Sunburst with a lovely flamed maple top. It's a solid piece of kit, beautifully glued together, and of course the sound is sensational, all passive and warm and lovely without any of that plastic pre-amp sound, and simple controls for volume and tone on each pickup. It may not be quintessential Warwick in terms of its style, but as a piece of German musical instrument engineering, it's a vintage in the making. Available new at Wunjo bass.
