Gretsch Super Axe 1976 Black Transparent

£1995.00

One of the coolest guitars ever made, this 1976 Gretsch Super Axe is cooler than whatever you've got. Don't worry, you're not alone. Few musicians have anything as boss as this rare gem, and although that's a shame, it lets us appreciate the majesty of this wide boi when it does appear. A design born of legendary string-smoker Chet Atkin's endless quest for greater sustain, the Super Axe is a dominating instrument to look at, and while most remember it for its worthy on-board electronics, it was also a pretty spanking guitar. Those electronics comprised a master volume and tone, a compressor and a phaser, with their own knobs. You get a blend AND a rate for the phaser, as well as a sustain knob for the compressor, and on the top horn is a 3-way toggle for the Japan-built humbuckers. As wide as a 335 but with an extended Florentine cutaway, the Super Axe was built around a solid Mahogany body and neck, which was topped with a bound Ebony fingerboard. Not a gimmicky guitar in any way, this is a lesser-spotted, slim necked monster which only lived for 2 years. This was also Chet Atkins last model with Gretsch before he moved to other pastures, and a fittingly outrageous swansong for a guitarist that was a game-changer in his own right. Agonisingly groovy and becoming harder to find, this is a very, very cool guitar, so get down and check it out! Now protected by a three year warranty with our super techs, this 1976 Gretsch Super Axe is available at Wunjos with a hard case as standard.
