This 1953 Gibson ES-5 is a stunning example of one of Gibson's finest archtop guitars ever produced. Its body is crafted from high-quality maple wood, finished in a rich sunburst color that has aged beautifully over time. The guitar has a distinct ƒ hole design that is characteristic of Gibson archtops, providing a warm and resonant sound.
The neck of the ES-5 is also made from maple, with a rosewood fretboard and mother-of-pearl inlays. The neck profile is comfortable and easy to play, with a scale length of 24.75 inches.
One of the standout features of the ES-5 is its trio of P-90 single-coil pickups. These pickups deliver a rich and full-bodied tone, with plenty of warmth and clarity. They are controlled by the 3 individual volume controls and a master tone on the lower horn providing a wide range of tonal options.
The ES-5 was designed with versatility in mind, making it suitable for a variety of musical genres. It can produce everything from smooth jazz tones to twangy country sounds and gritty blues riffs. The guitar has a powerful and dynamic sound that is sure to impress any guitarist.
Overall, the 1953 Gibson ES-5 is a remarkable instrument that represents the pinnacle of electric archtop guitar design. Its classic styling and exceptional sound quality make it a highly sought-after collector's item and a joy to play.
The P-90s and electronics are all original but it's had some maintenance work done over the years to keep it in peak playing condition (the type you would come to expect of a guitar this age and calibre). There's signs of a historic heel repair as well as a refret, this will have been done to ensure the integrity of the join, neck angle and intonation. Period correct replacement tuners have been added to maximise tuning stability and there's evidence of a Bigsby B7 that was added at some point in its life (indicated by the slight, circular nitro burn by the bridge) but fear not, a vintage and period correct tailpiece has made its home right alongside the vintage reproduction Rosewood bridge.
The finish is in lovely condition and has an excellent checking and play wear after over 70 years in the spotlight. It plays brilliantly and is available with original Lifton case but a flight case can be provided if necessary!
