The Norlin era for Gibson can be remembered for an era of experimentation, and here is one of their most innovative designs.
The Gibson Sonex 180 Deluxe, made with a core of tone wood, doubling as an anchor point for the bolt on neck, and then incased with Resonwood - a composite of Resin and wood chippings - that was incredibly durable, cost effective and brought its own tonal character and response to the table. It was heralded as the first of its kind!
Loaded with a set of high output Zebra Humbuckers and an affordable price tag, these guitars ended up almost synonymous with Sludge and Doom Metal when legendary guitarist Jim Bower of Crowbar picked his up first in the 80s.
